January 09, 2012

LUNENBURG, Nova Scotia – The Acorn Press and MacIntyre Purcell Publishing will continue connecting Canadian authors with readers across the country and internationally, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada. This was announced today by Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament (South Shore–St. Margaret’s), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

The Acorn Press and MacIntyre Purcell Publishing are both successful publishers in Atlantic Canada. They produce colorful and interesting books by a wide range of authors and editors for readers of all ages around the world.

“Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in important businesses like Acorn Press and MacIntyre Purcell Publishing,” said Minister Moore. “By supporting these publishers, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and support arts, culture, and heritage.”

“The Government of Canada is proud to offer its support to Canadian book publishers,” said Mr. Keddy. “These investments in Canadian publishers will provide our communities with excellent quality products to further complement Canada’s already outstanding collection of literary achievements.”

“The Canada Book Fund enables companies like MacIntyre Purcell Publishing Inc. to employ Canadian writers, editors, and illustrators and take their finished books to audiences around the world,” said publisher John MacIntyre. “Canadian publishers are increasing their profile and sales at home and in the international marketplace because of this program by Canadian Heritage.”

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $17,692 for Acorn Press and $77,743 for MacIntyre Purcell Publishing through the Support for Publishers stream of the Canada Book Fund (CBF). The principal objective of the CBF is to ensure access to a diverse range of Canadian-authored books in Canada and abroad. The Fund seeks to achieve this objective by fostering a strong Canadian book industry that publishes and markets Canadian-authored books.
